When would Steven Gerrard return to Liverpool as Aston Villa manager?

Steven Gerrard could make a return to Liverpool this season as he’s linked with the Aston Villa job. So when could that happen?

Steven Gerrard is apparently high on the Aston Villa shortlist right now, per the BBC. The current Rangers boss could well make his Premier League return before long.

Villa sacked long-time boss Dean Smith this week after a terrible run of defeats. In truth, they haven’t looked right since the start of the year.

The loss of Jack Grealish certainly hurt them but the money they’ve spent hasn’t led to a turnaround in form.

And Gerrard, now boasting a Scottish league title on his CV, is the frontrunner for the job. Understandably so, really.

But that would mean a return to the Premier League and, of course, games against Liverpool. So when do Aston Villa face the Reds?

Gerrard to make Liverpool return?

Liverpool don’t just face Aston Villa on December 11th – they host them. That means we could see Gerrard back at Anfield in a little over a month.

If Villa get their way, of course – Rangers might have other ideas. As may Gerrard, too, as this would be a big gamble from him.

He’s in a wonderful position in Scotland as a champion gunning for his second title. Rangers sit top of the Premiership, four points above Celtic.

And having brought such success back to Rangers, his job couldn’t really be more secure. That certainly wouldn’t be the case by jumping to a Premier League side that needs turning around.

So we’ll have to wait and see what happens this week. It could well be, though, that we see Liverpool’s former captain back at Anfield before the end of the year.

He’d be trying to defeat the Reds, in fact. That’ll certainly take some getting used to.
