Kaide Gordon remains Liverpool’s best option in January despite reports of a transfer plan. The Reds have some work to do ahead of AFCON.
Liverpool will have three players at AFCON to kick-off 2022. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita should all disappear – though, it’s unclear for how long.
Now, Liverpool can cover Keita. There are enough midfielders at the club to make up for his absence, while the Guinean isn’t entirely established as a key player.
Salah and Mane, though? That’s a problem. They’re Liverpool’s two top scorers and best attackers. They’re also both wingers and that’s an extra problem.
Diogo Jota can cover one of the wings, of course, but the other is open. And that’s supposedly why Liverpool want a winger in January.
“Liverpool are looking for wingers because in January they’ll be losing Salah & Mané,” Fabrizio Romano told his Here We Go podcast.
This is very last-minute, however, and we think Liverpool’s best-bet might be going with someone already at the club.
Kaide Gordon hasn’t made any serious impact at senior level yet. He’ll get there eventually but right now? We wouldn’t exactly throw him in to face Manchester City.
He is the future out wide, however, and Liverpool will want to invest in him. Part of that is giving him minutes when they can, bringing on his development.
Perhaps January can be a big part of that.
Any signing Liverpool make won’t be ready in time. We know the club like to wait on players as few can simply slide into the XI and perform as they need.
Jurgen Klopp’s system takes time to learn. It’s why players like Andy Robertson and Fabinho had to wait so long before playing. Even Jota needed some easing in.
The chances of Liverpool finding the right player in January seems slim, then. They can’t exactly sign a superstar, given Salah and Mane will return after a month.
The alternative is overpaying for a squad player. That begs the question of why they didn’t do that in the summer.
We can’t see a new signing having the right impact. Instead, banking on Takumi Minamino to play a decent role with Gordon getting proper minutes as an option seems best to us.
Liverpool don’t need a youngster as they’ve got Gordon. They don’t need a star as they’ve got Salah. They certainly don’t need an overpriced squad player who’s out of a role 30 days later.
It could be Gordon’s time to shine in the first-team and we think Liverpool should take a chance. They’ll be grateful down the line.
