Liverpool really needed to be better in order to beat West Ham. But the performance that Declan Rice put in was absolutely world-class and explains why he is reportedly wanted by the Reds.
Liverpool really struggled to break West Ham down and, while just about every one of David Moyes’ players was performing at his absolute best against the Reds, Rice was head and shoulders above them all.
According to Dean Jones, who wrote about Liverpool’s interest in Rice in July, the Anfield outfit is on the same page as Chelsea and the Manchester clubs regarding the West Ham midfielder – they all want him.
Not only did Rice have a 91% pass accuracy against Liverpool, but he also won 75% of his duels, attempted 21 forward passes with an 85% success rate, had 10 ball recoveries, made five tackles and made one interception.
In a game where Liverpool were sliced apart like a warm knife through butter, Jurgen Klopp would surely have loved to switch Rice for the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
A midfield with Fabinho, Rice and Thiago would have the steel and fight needed to beat most teams in the Premier League without fuss, while also having the control and talent necessary to unlock defences.
Rice ranks first at West Ham for blocks, interceptions, passing accuracy, ball recoveries, successful passes and tackles won. That normally wouldn’t be that impressive, but West Ham have been one of the best sides in the Premier League this season.
Signing Rice would be no easy feat as his contract only expires in 2024 and West Ham have the option to renew for another year. So his reported £100million valuation will likely be upheld by the Hammers.
If Liverpool could get him for £60million, I think he would be a superb signing for Jurgen Klopp.
