‘Liverpool are looking’: Fabrizio Romano says Reds want one signing in particular

Fabrizio Romano believes Liverpool want one specific signing in January. The Reds have an upcoming problem they must fix.

Liverpool will head into the January transfer window with a signing in mind. That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, anyway.

“Liverpool are looking for wingers because in January they’ll be losing [Mohamed] Salah & [Sadio] Mané,” Romano told his Here We Go podcast.

“No panic buys – only if they have a good opportunity they’ll do it.”

Liverpool will lose both Salah and Mane because of the Africa Cup of Nations, of course. Though, it’s unclear exactly how long they’ll be gone.

It all depends on when the national team call players up. Technically, they can do that as early as December 27th – but that will cause tension between nations and clubs.

No matter what, Liverpool will miss Salah and Mane (and Naby Keita) for two Premier League games in January. Perhaps it’s more but at the very least, it’s two.

It doesn’t really need explaining how short that leaves them. Salah and Mane are Liverpool’s top scorers and the most dangerous players at the club. Take them out and the Reds appear quite blunt.

Signing a winger is certainly a fix but not a perfect one. Liverpool would need the right player, need them to click with the side immediately and they must be available in the January window.

Honestly, we can’t imagine they find such a star. Especially as that player would quickly fall out of the starting XI behind two of the world’s best. Is a top player going to like that situation? Almost certainly not.

The time to sign someone was the summer, then. It’s an easier market and the player would have had months to adapt fully.

This feels like too little, too late.
