Worst we’ve seen: 4 Liverpool players struggled badly in 3-2 West Ham loss

Liverpool lost 3-2 to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon. It was a terrible performance where four players struggled, in particular.

Sadio Mane

Nothing went right for Mane in this one but some of his decision making was brutal. Be it trying speculative shots from 30 yards or waiting far too long before passing, Mane had one to forget.

Six misplaced passes, too, as well as losing the ball in the buildup to West Ham’s second. We saw poor touches on the halfway line, too, and he sent Liverpool’s best chance straight at the goalkeeper.

He then sent Liverpool’s second-best chance wide late on.

Just not good enough.

Joel Matip

Matip struggled with West Ham’s physicality and running here. In fact, while Alisson’s mistake from the corner was terrible, that corner only happened because Matip lost Michail Antonio.

The West Ham striker spun inside his own half to get the wrong side of Matip. From there, Virgil van Dijk had to come across and concede the corner.

But Matip continued to struggle with West Ham pushing through the middle. We thought Ibrahima Konate would have suited this game but Klopp went with Matip. In hindsight, the 22-year-old may have been a better fit.

Andy Robertson

Fans wanted Kostas Tsimikas to retain his place for this one. Instead, Andy Robertson got the nod – which we didn’t think was surprising.

But maybe we got that one wrong. Robertson struggled badly going forward, with poor touches and deliveries here.

We still believe the Scot is the world’s best left-back and wouldn’t swap him for anyone. But this wasn’t good enough.

With Tsimikas waiting in the wings, Robertson is under serious pressure.

Alisson

This might have been the worst performance we’ve seen from Alisson in a Liverpool shirt. It all started with a glaring error from a corner.

Alisson should have got the ball away but under pressure from Angelo Aogbonna, he deflected it into his own net.

But the Brazilian also should have done better with West Ham’s second and third goals. Instead, they made him look quite foolish each time. Liverpool don’t lose 3-2 to West Ham if Alisson is at his best.

Hopefully, just a bizarre one-off. Liverpool can’t afford more like this.
