Jamie Carragher reacts to photo of Liverpool's 'greatest ever' defenders

Jamie Carragher labelled a photo from Virgil van Dijk as a picture of Liverpool’s ‘greatest ever’ defenders. It’s hard to argue with the Scouser.

Virgil van Dijk uploaded a Twitter photo on Thursday of himself with Liverpool great Alan Hansen. Jamie Carragher believes the photo shows off the club’s best ever centre-backs.

“Not a bad partnership!” wrote Van Dijk.

“These two are [Liverpool’s] greatest ever CB’s,” wrote Carragher.

“Alan Hansen was ahead of his time in the 1980s & [Van Dijk] will finish his time in the PremierLeague as its best central defender.”

Hansen & Van Dijk – the best ever?

Honestly, it’s hard to argue with this. Hansen is undoubtedly the Reds’ best and most successful centre-back ever.

As Carragher says, Hansen was ahead of his time. He was a magnificent defender on the ball and helped Liverpool play the brand of football they wanted through the late 70s and 80s.

Couple that with their brilliant defensive record and there’s little argument.

At the end of the day, Hansen is the most successful defender British football has ever seen. Eight league titles, three European Cups and numerous individual awards show that off.

Could Van Dijk ever catch Hansen, though?

Well, he’s certainly not matching that trophy haul. Van Dijk is part of a wonderfully successful Liverpool side but not one as dominant as Hansen’s.

But we’ll definitely agree with Carragher that Van Dijk can go down as the greatest Premier League defender. He’s the best we’ve seen (Hansen being a touch before our time) and no one else blends all of his qualities together.

Liverpool rely on Van Dijk to marshall the defence, sweep up long balls, defend one-on-one and play a big part in their passing game. He does it all without breaking a sweat.

A magnificent player and, in all likelihood, one who will join Hansen as the best defenders we’ve seen at Liverpool.
