New Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte wants to sign Franck Kessie, according to reports. Liverpool may have to give up on this one.
This comes from Gazzetta Dello Sport. They claim that Antonio Conte has his sights on Franck Kessie. In fact, he wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign the player in January.
Kessie is in an interesting position as a very talented midfielder who’s still only 24 but available on the cheap. His contract with AC Milan expires next summer, meaning he’s almost certainly up for grabs in January.
But that would mean paying a fee for someone you can get for nothing the following July. Teams will be unwilling to do that – unless you have a new manager who wants immediate squad-building.
Spurs are exactly that right now and it seems they’re willing to pay a little extra to get the player.
Conte moves for Kessie
Both Gazzetta Dello Sport and Mundo Deportivo recently reported that Liverpool want Kessie on a free transfer next year. He’d fill in a gap left in the squad by Gini Wijnaldum quite nicely – and with only wages to consider.
But that’s only if Spurs don’t move first. We just can’t see Liverpool getting involved in any sort of bidding war for someone who they wanted for free. Kessie’s value changes dramatically as he’d almost certainly want the same wages.
Liverpool don’t typically add to their squad in January unless there’s a glaring need. It’s arguable whether that need is there – they didn’t replace Wijnaldum, after all, but there are a lot of midfielders at the club.
As long as there’s an argument, it feels unlikely that Liverpool sign Kessie for a transfer fee. If they value his addition highly, perhaps the transfer fee still makes him a sensible signing. It’s hard to believe the club think that way, however.
In fact, the only real hope here is that Kessie rejects Spurs because he wants multiple offers to consider. There is a chance that happens but after their start, we think Spurs will put whatever money is necessary into this one.
There are few players on the market like Kessie and if Conte wants him, it makes complete sense for Spurs to spend extra and steal a march on the competition.
It just feels as though that will comes at Liverpool’s cost.
