Some Liverpool fans believe it’s time Kostas Tsimikas made a return to the starting XI. The Reds face Atletico Madrid in midweek.
Andy Robertson didn’t have a great game against Brighton. The Scot started at left-back but nothing really went his way on the day.
No key passes, no dribbles, no successful tackles. Robertson did make three interceptions but that was really the only highlight of his performance.
Now, the important context here is that Liverpool as a whole didn’t play particularly well. They started brightly but faded badly in the second half, creating nothing and struggling to contain Brighton.
For some, that’s a sign that Robertson should bow out of the starting XI against Atletico Madrid. Kostas Tsimikas – who hasn’t conceded a goal this season – should come in instead.
Fans call for Tsimikas return
This seems very harsh on Robertson. He’s not quite hitting the same assist numbers as he usually does but his underlying stats are very similar to recent seasons.
It’s also important to remember that Liverpool haven’t lost a game this season, with Robertson starting the majority. Saying that he needs to drop out is strong – he had an excellent performance just last week at Old Trafford.
But it is also true that Tsimikas is worth looking at regularly. He’s been pretty great this season, keeping clean sheets and contributing to wins. Liverpool looked like a very good side with the Greek starting.
So for that reason, we’re not entirely against the idea of starting Tsimikas against Atletico. We’d be confident of a fine performance, certainly, and resting Robertson with more regularity could pay dividends in 2022.
Liverpool actually have solid backup at full-back for once. Perhaps it would be sensible to use it more often, with this Champions League night at Anfield a fine chance to do so.
