Report: Liverpool watch Antonio Rudiger closely as contract nears end

Liverpool have eyes on Antonio Rudiger, according to reports. The Chelsea defender is coming to the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

This comes from Eurosport. They claim that Liverpool are one of a number of top European clubs looking at Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger’s contract with Chelsea expires in 2022, prompting interest. It’s starting to look less and less likely that he’ll renew, too, while the Blues fear he could remain in the Premier League.

That will worry them as both Manchester City & Liverpool – Chelsea’s two primary title rivals – supposedly like the look of Rudiger.

The German has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs under Thomas Tuchel. That’s certainly something the Chelsea boss recognises.

“Toni has established himself exceptionally since the first day we arrived,” Tuchel told Bild. “He is an absolute leader and plays at an incredibly high level.”

Chelsea may well see him take that level elsewhere in 2022, however.

Liverpool want Rudiger?

It’s difficult to see exactly what Liverpool would do with a 28-year-old centre-back who would want regular first-team football. There just isn’t room for that.

Rudiger is brilliant but would he be a clear upgrade on Joel Matip? We’re not sure he would be. There’s little sense in putting someone ahead of Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, either – they’re Liverpool’s future at the back.

As good as Rudiger is, he’s not at a level where you rip up your current plans to sign him. Especially as competition for his signature is so high – those wages aren’t going to be cheap.

So we won’t exactly hold out breath on this one. Unless there’s a major sale in defence, signing Rudiger just doesn’t make sense. We’d much rather any money in wages went towards someone in midfield or attack.

Or Mohamed Salah’s new contract.
