Adrian is in line to start for Liverpool against Preston North End tomorrow. The Spaniard is yet to feature this season.
Adrian doesn’t have the strongest role at Liverpool. He’s the third-choice goalkeeper, some distance behind Alisson Becker and even Caoimhin Kelleher at this point.
The fact that Kelleher is ahead of Adrian drastically reduces his game-time. The Irishman is 12 years younger, after all, and only getting better. Adrian, at 34, is past his prime.
Thus he must wait for absences before getting genuine opportunities. It seems that one will come tomorrow, however.
Pep Lijnders doesn’t believe that Kelleher will recover from illness in time to play against Preston North End. He missed the game against Manchester United at the weekend with the same illness.
“Not sure, [Kelleher] trained with the team but it seems he had a little setback so he probably will not be involved,” said Lijnders, per Liverpoolfc.com.
Adrian in line for Preston start
Alisson never features in the EFL Cup, which makes Adrian the clear no.1 choice here. It’ll be his first appearance for some time and does hand him an opportunity.
After all, the only way he’s ever getting back ahead of Kelleher is by shining when he does get games. A confident performance with a clean-sheet and perhaps Adrian can force his way to that no.2 spot.
In all likelihood, it won’t be enough no matter how well he plays. Kelleher has shone in some big games now, keeping clean sheets in both the Premier League and Champions League over the last 12 months. That counts for a lot – especially when he’s the much younger player.
Adrian can offer a reminder that he still has a role to play in this squad, though, if he gets his likely run-out tomorrow.
