The 2 Liverpool records Mohamed Salah on a historic night in Madrid

Mohamed Salah broke two Liverpool records on Tuesday evening as he scored twice against Atletico Madrid. The Egyptian is in the form of his life.

Yes, Liverpool’s opener is officially a Mohamed Salah goal. There was some confusion over the effort, with the 29-year-old’s shot deflecting into the back of the net.

It wasn’t clear if James Milner intentionally diverted it home, though. The Liverpool vice-captain says he isn’t claiming it – Salah gets another goal, then.

There wasn’t any doubt about Salah’s second. He stepped up to take Liverpool’s penalty, scoring what turned out to be the winner.

And with that, Salah set the second of two records in Madrid.

Nine in a row

Salah has now scored in nine consecutive games for Liverpool. It’s the first time anyone has ever managed that for the club.

We find that a truly remarkable stat, given some of the goalscorers to have worn the Red. But none of Roger Hunt, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler or whoever else you want to name managed nine in a row.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

It’s yet more proof that Salah is in that group of elite goalscorers for Liverpool. He’s achieving things that even the most successful players in the club’s history couldn’t and doing it with some regularity.

Now if he could just make it 10 in a row against Manchester United on Sunday…

All-time Champions League top scorer

Salah’s second goal was his 31st in the Champions League for Liverpool – another record. It moved him beyond Steven Gerrard’s haul, putting the Egyptian out on his own.

Unlike the first record, this one was inevitable. While we didn’t expect him to score twice against Atletico Madrid, we knew he’d eventually get two Champions League goals this season.

Salah has consistently delivered in Europe’s premier competition ever since arriving at Anfield. Now he has the record, we’re just waiting to see how high he sets the new mark.

His eventual tally may stand for quite some time.
