Report: Liverpool in for Ricardo Pepi as 18-year-old requests transfer

Liverpool are one of several clubs looking at Ricardo Pepi, according to reports. The American wants a transfer.

This comes from CBS Sports. They claim that Ricardo Pepi wants to leave FC Dallas and has asked for a transfer.

That sparks interest in Europe. Liverpool are one of several clubs looking at Pepi, along with the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

One interesting one is Wolfsburg. The German side have supposedly agreed terms with Pepi already, though there’s no agreement with Dallas.

And the latter may be tough for anyone to get. The MLS side don’t want to sell Pepi right now as they believe his value will increase after the World Cup next year.

The 18-year-old is a USA international, after all. He’ll almost certainly feature at that tournament and could, if all goes well, drastically increase his reputation.

But that doesn’t mean Dallas won’t sell now. Pepi’s transfer request could force their hand and they may accept around £10m. Now it’s up to the European clubs whether he’s worth that or not.

Liverpool want Pepi

Pepi does appear to be a talent. At just 18, he’s already played over 50 MLS games and has 13 goals in 27 this season.

On top of that, Pepi has three goals in four appearances for his national side. The potential is certainly there, then, and £10m might not be too much to pay.

The only real problem is that the MLS isn’t the strongest league in the world. While £10m isn’t much to spend on an exciting talent, it is a lot to spend on a player who might need quite a bit more development.

After all, being able to score in MLS doesn’t necessarily translate to the Premier League. Liverpool would need to decide whether Pepi is good enough to have a place in the first-team squad, then, because £10m on an Under 23 player is certainly too much.

Still, the Reds have interest here, which tells us they’re high on Pepi. We’ll have to wait and see where this one goes.
