Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got people talking with a very encouraging display against Atletico Madrid. The midfielder came off the bench to deliver a solid performance.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had a very tough time of it in recent seasons. His role in the squad hasn’t been clear, while young players like Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott leapfrogged him in the pecking order.
That’s never good news for a 28-year-old. Once those young players are ahead of you, it’s hard to ever get your place back.
But that’s why Oxlade-Chamberlain can take such pride in his performance against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The midfielder really got people talking.
Oxlade-Chamberlain vs Atletico
Oxlade-Chamberlain only got 27 minutes in Madrid but he really stood out. His energy levels were magnificent, while he was quite unlucky not to score a wonderful goal.
The Englishman combined well with Mohamed Salah at one point, working a shot in the area that fizzed into Jan Oblak’s hands. Either side and he had a goal.
But while that didn’t quite come off, just about everything else did. Oxlade-Chamberlain completed 14 of 15 passes, for instance, which was exactly what Liverpool needed.
Most impressively, Oxlade-Chamberlain won three tackles in 27 minutes. That was a game-high for Liverpool that only Fabinho matched.
It was a wonderful cameo and one that had fans talking on Twitter.
This was the kind of performance that earns Oxlade-Chamberlain more minutes, then. He showed precisely what Liverpool wanted and provided a burst of life into a tricky fixture.
Now, we don’t know if that translates into a showing against Manchester United on Sunday. What we can say, though, is that Oxlade-Chamberlain deserves some more opportunities on the back of this.
If he can show this kind of performance with more consistency – from the bench or from the off – Oxlade-Chamberlain can be a serious weapon in Jurgen Klopp’s arsenal.
