Atletico Madrid wait nervously as Marcos Llorente may miss Liverpool clash

Marcos Llorente admits he doesn’t know if he’ll play against Liverpool next week. The Spaniard is the latest doubt for Atletico Madrid.

Marcos Llorente may not be fit in time to face Liverpool next week. Atletico Madrid host the Reds on Tuesday in a huge Champions League game for both clubs.

They’re the two favourites to advance, after all, but defeat for either would be a low as AC Milan and FC Porto look to progress. With that in mind, Atletico have quite a lot to be nervous about.

They’ve already suffered one awkward injury blow for this one. Jose Gimenez will likely miss the game after returning injured from international duty.

Stefan Savic is suspended, leaving Diego Simeone short on centre-back options. You can read more of our thoughts on that one here.

And now it seems as though another key Atletico player could be out. Llorente – who has emerged as a star midfielder over the last two years – isn’t sure he’ll make it.

“I don’t know if I will face Liverpool since it would come very soon and with few training sessions with the team,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo. “It all depends on how things progress in the next few days.”

Marcos Llorente could miss Liverpool game

The easier that game becomes, the better for Liverpool. And not necessarily ‘easy’ as in the result – just a less intense fixture would be great.

The Reds will almost certainly be happy with a draw in Madrid as that’s a big step towards qualification. There’s another factor to consider, though – Manchester United.

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford next weekend and will likely want to use a similar XI against both Atletico and United. The simpler the midweek game, the more ready that XI is for the weekend.

Llorente missing the game – along with the centre-back issues – will almost certainly force Atletico into a cautious playing style. That should benefit Liverpool greatly, all things considered.
