Liverpool asked about Raphinha this summer, according to his agent. Leeds United may be more open to selling in 2022.
It appears Liverpool did try and sign Raphinha this summer. That’s according to Deco, the player’s agent.
“Raphinha has become an important player in the Premier League,” said Deco, per Globo Esporte. “The club knows he has grown and things will happen naturally.
“He’s young, he has many challenges ahead. There are certainly several clubs that like him, and Liverpool do like him, there were approaches, but nothing official.
“Leeds wanted to keep him for another season.”
Agent confirms Raphinha enquiry
Raphinha is one of the most exciting players in the Premier League right now and, arguably, the standout at Leeds United. He’s certainly catching the eye for Brazil, too, and is currently one of the Selecao’s shining lights.
The 24-year-old could well be set for a big move in 2022, then. Liverpool apparently thought that could happen in 2021 but Leeds didn’t see it that way.
Deco’s final line there certainly gives the impression that Leeds will reassess things next summer. If that’s true, we imagine Liverpool will ask about the player.
Raphinha won’t be cheap, though. Leeds will surely want comfortably over £50m for an in-form player moving into his prime – the question is whether Liverpool would meet the asking price.
We know they can. When the right player comes along, Liverpool will pay a hefty fee and they seem to put extra weight into ‘Premier League proven’ players.
We saw it with Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Virgil van Dijk and Diogo Jota. All arrived for eyebrow-raising fees but all proved to be the right fit.
Perhaps Liverpool view Raphinha as similar, then. If so, next summer could well see a blockbuster transfer as the Reds move for another Premier League star.
