Liverpool should prioritise Franck Kessie with double free-agent deal reportedly on the cards

Liverpool should prioritise a free-agent deal for Franck Kessie in 2022. The Reds reportedly have two such deals on the cards.

Liverpool supposedly want Franck Kessie in 2022. The Ivorian’s contract with AC Milan expires next summer, meaning the Reds could offer him a deal in January.

And multiple reports suggest that’s very possible. Gazzetta Dello Sport and Mundo Deportivo both claimed that Liverpool are near the front of the queue this week.

But Kessie ins’t the only free-agent the Reds have in mind, it seems. Cuatro in Spain believe Liverpool are seriously considering Ousmane Dembele as a similar signing.

Dembele’s deal is up next summer, too. Barcelona appear to be struggling to renew it and he could leave the club. Again, Liverpool could make their move in January.

So what should Liverpool do? Here are two very talented 24-year-old players available without a transfer fee. Both will want big contracts, though, and carry a certain amount of risk.

For us, this means Liverpool should prioritise a deal.

Free-agent Kessie

As we say, both deals carry risk. With Kessie, for instance, he hasn’t actually shone at the highest level before.

He’s clearly a very good player and one with heaps of talent. But this is his first Champions League season, while AC Milan haven’t fought for the title with the Ivorian.

It’s perhaps not the biggest worry in the world but when he’s asking for a reported £130k-a-week, it’s something to consider.

The risk is far more obvious with Dembele, however. His potential is arguably higher but it comes with the knowledge that he can break down at any time. And when he does, you might not see the Frenchman for some time.

He played over 40 games in the 18/19 season but followed that up with nine in 19/20. 20/21 saw a return to over 40 games – is that going to stick, though? It hasn’t so far.

The other factor here is Liverpool’s squad. They have pacey wingers and some very, very good ones. While it means Dembele would certainly fit in, there isn’t a massive upgrade to the squad there.

Liverpool don’t have an all-action defensive midfielder, though. Certainly not someone who could play in front of Fabinho and press like Kessie. The Reds lack a player like that.

So with Kessie, we think Liverpool find a lower risk than Dembele and, potentially, a bigger boost to their squad. That’s the free-agent deal they should prioritise going forward.
