Liverpool want Pape Abou Cisse, according to reports. So who is the player and why do the Reds want him?
The Daily Mail claims that Liverpool want Pape Abou Cisse. They say the Reds lead the race for him, in fact, ahead of Arsenal and Everton.
The Reds supposedly sent scouts to watch Cisse play for Olympiacos against Fenerbahce – a match the Greek side won 3-0. Impressed, Liverpool have made inquiries into his availabilty.
Who is Pape Abou Cisse?
Cisse is a 26-year-old centre-back playing for Olympiacos. He’s been there for a few years now, too, having joined in 2017.
The defender also spent the second half of last season with Saint-Etienne in France. The Ligue 1 side didn’t end up making that move permanent, however.
So Cisse has a fair amount of experience under his belt. He’s played two years in France’s Ligue 2 and over 100 games in all competitions for Olympiacos. He’s also someone Sadio Mane will know – they’re both Senegal internationals.
It’s worth pointing out that Cisse is a particularly imposing defender, too. He stands at 6ft 6 (197cm) – that’s slightly taller than Virgil van Dijk, who dwarfs most players he comes up against.
Why do Liverpool want him?
No idea – in fact, we doubt they really do. The Mail’s article talks about Liverpool wanting to ‘strengthen at centre-back’ but they already did that this summer with Ibrahima Konate.
Nat Phillips is still at the club, too, meaning Liverpool have five senior centre-backs at the club. That’s a lot for a club that typically only uses two at a time.
What does seem to be true, though, is that Liverpool had scouts at that Fenerbahce vs Olympiacos game. Sportime in Greece say the Reds were looking at Aguibou Camara, however – a 20-year-old midfielder that makes a lot more sense.
So we’d be very surprised if Liverpool made a move for Cisse. It’s not a deal that makes sense and it would be quite bizarre for the club to spend money there at this point.
Instead, Camara is the Olympiacos player you should probably keep an eye on.
