Pep Lijnders believes Jurgen Klopp has exceeded all expectations at Liverpool. The coach has helped lead an enormously successful period at Anfield.
Friday saw Liverpool celebrate six years of Jurgen Klopp. The German arrived back in 2015 to much fanfare and things have gone reasonably well since he took over.
Another way to put it would be ‘unbelievably well’. This has been Liverpool’s most successful period since the 1980s and, fingers crossed, there’s more to come.
So just what did Liverpool expect when they hired Klopp? That’s a difficult one to judge but according to Pep Lijnders, the boss has exceeded all expectations.
Lijnders on Klopp
“The club has so much potential; to fulfil this you need to go back to the holy trinity of the past. Manager, fans and squad with just one belief,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “When this happens, the football world conspires in favour of Liverpool Football Club.
“When a club is fighting for 30 years to win the Premier League, when a club never won the FIFA Club World Cup before, when a club gets 97 points and wins the Champions League that season, it’s clear it exceeded our expectations.”
It seems obvious now – of course things exceeded expectations. But it’s worth pointing out just how high expectations always have been at Liverpool.
They’re the most successful British club of all time. A club that went 30 years without the title and still held onto that spot. Klopp arrived knowing that anything less than delivering the absolute biggest trophies and things would look underwhelming.
And he’s done just that. Klopp brought home both the league title and the European Cup, doing so while maintaining a connection with a club that few can manage.
It’s really not up for debate that Klopp has exceeded expectations – we all know he has. But that is an unbelievable achievement in its own right and one worth celebrating six years in.
We do hope there’s more to come but what we’ve had so far is the wildest dreams coming true.
