Sky Sports rank one Liverpool player as the second-best footballer in Europe right now. Four current Reds make the top 100.
Sky Sports put out power rankings this week where a formula using 35 statistics across Europe’s top 5 leagues determines which players are putting in the best performances.
And according to their algorithm, Mohamed Salah has been the second-best player in Europe so far this season. Honestly, the only surprise is that he isn’t first.
Karim Benzema takes top spot, however. The Frenchman is currently in the form of his life, scoring nine and assisting seven in his opening eight La Liga games. Real Madrid are largely Benzema FC right now.
Thus it isn’t any criticism of Salah to put him second. The Egyptian sits just above Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe as Europe’s next-best player.
And rightfully so. Salah is in unbelievable form right now and, for us, he’s the best player on the planet. We certainly wouldn’t swap him for anyone else.
Sky Sports rank Europe’s best
Liverpool actually boast another three players in Europe’s top 100. That’s a higher number than it first sounds – it’s the same as Paris Saint-Germain (though, theirs all come in the top 20) and two more than Real.
You have to drop all the way to 42nd to find the next Red, though. Sadio Mane places there, marginally ahead of Robert Lewandowski and just below Jonathan David.
Keep going to 76th and you’ll find Alisson Becker. The Brazilian is the highest-placed ‘big name’ goalkeeper – the others tend to come from smaller sides.
And squeezing into the top 100 is Diogo Jota at 95th. The 24-year-old has hasn’t had the most consistent campaign in the world but Jota is certainly enjoying a good one.
So those are Liverpool’s four best players this season, apparently. We’re not entirely sure we agree with that summation but Sky Sports have their own methods.
What is for certain, though, is that Salah is playing as well as anyone this season. We’ll back him to sit atop every ranking like this by the end of the campaign.
