Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are the two biggest names on the transfer market. New reports could impact Liverpool’s plans, however.
Are Liverpool going to sign either Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland in the transfer window? Almost certainly not – let’s be honest. Whether you believe the Reds should get involved is another matter but they never really get involved in races like that.
But regardless of the Reds’ plans, new reports surrounding Mbappe and Haaland could affect them.
Mbappe & Haaland in the transfer window?
Now, these two stars are supposed to move in 2022. Mbappe’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires, while Haaland supposedly has an agreement with Borussia Dortmund.
But that could all change, apparently. Mbappe’s mother tells Le Parisien that they’re still in talks with PSG over a new deal and the striker could re-sign.
Bild journalist Christian Falk claims that Dortmund don’t want to let Haaland go, either. They’re happy to double his wages in order to keep him until 2023.
If Liverpool do want either player, then this is bad news. Both deals would drive up prices or take them off the market altogether in 2022. The Reds would have to look elsewhere.
But we don’t think they’re getting involved with these two. Unfortunately, the new contract still wouldn’t spare the club.
Liverpool almost certainly need to sign a centre-forward at some point. Divock Origi is the only out-and-out one at the club right now, while ‘False 9’ Roberto Firmino is 30.
And if Liverpool aren’t looking at Mbappe & Haaland, they’ll be looking at the market below that. There are some very intriguing names there.
Then there are the likes of Alexander Isak and Jonathan David – wonderful young strikers who could make a step up. Liverpool were in a very strong position to sign such players as Real Madrid, Manchester City and other giants eyed up Mbappe & Haaland.
But if the latter two stay put, those giants will also be in Liverpool’s market. We can’t imagine Real and City going another year without signing a decent centre-forward, after all. They’ll want the best they can get – if that’s not Mbappe or Haaland, it’s Vlahovic or Isak.
This could really make things tougher for Liverpool in 2022, then. By taking away the prized assets, competition for the next-best-thing will only go up.
