Jamie Redknapp believes Roberto Firmino could start against Manchester City. He sees it as a choice between two for Liverpool.
Liverpool face their biggest game of the season on Sunday – Manchester City at Anfield. It always feels like a must-win game if the Reds are to properly challenge for the title.
But it’s one of the more difficult wins of the season. Perhaps the most difficult, in fact, given the expectation. Win at Anfield and a draw at the Etihad later in the campaign feels like a step towards the trophy.
Thus Jurgen Klopp has some big decisions to make. One of those is up top and whether Roberto Firmino should start the fixture now that he’s back.
Jamie Redknapp predicts that he will – at the expense of Diogo Jota.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if [Klopp] goes with Firmino this weekend,” he told Sky Sports. “Because of what he can do. He can get in and around, and what he does defensively.
“You’ve got the two options – Firmino or Jota. I think he might go Firmino.”
Should Firmino start vs Manchester City?
This would just be Firmino’s second start this season. His only other one came against Chelsea, though he went off injured in the first half.
Now the Brazilian is back and an option once again. He came off the bench against both Brentford and Porto, with his display in the latter being quite incredible.
Firmino only played 23 minutes but managed to score twice. He also won a couple of tackles in that time – he appears to be in red-hot form.
Enough that we think he should start this one, anyway. Liverpool could use some fresh legs on the pitch after two intense games in the last week. Throwing Firmino’s energy up top – given he didn’t start either game – could be vital.
So we’ll side with Redknapp on this one. Firmino looks fantastic right now and that’s got to get him the nod.
