Liverpool have enjoyed a strong start to their Champions League campaign. Our North West rivals on the other hand have been shaky to say the least. This week the Red Devils needed a last minute goal. Pepe Reina is adamant the Man United winner v Villareal was offside.
Liverpool icon Pepe Reina
In July 2005 Liverpool signed Pepe Reina from Villareal.
The Spaniard joined in the wake of the Reds’ historic win in Istanbul.
During an eight year stay on Merseyside the goalkeeper played 396 times for the Reds.
He was known for his stunning reflexes and his trademark flat kick which many keepers have sought to emulate since.
Reina won the Premier League Golden Glove in each of his first three seasons at Anfield.
Eventually he was ousted by Simon Mignolet. As a result Pepe joined Napoli on loan before spending a season with Bayern Munich ahead of a permanent move back to Napoli.
Pepe Reina on Man United winner v Villareal
This Champions League campaign hasn’t been a brilliant one so far.
United lost their opening fixture of the campaign 2-1 to Young Boys.
This week they were 1-0 down at home to Villareal and justifiably so, it could’ve been much worse if David De Gea wasn’t in such fine form.
It took a spectacular volley from Alex Telles to level matters.
Then in the final minute of added time Cristiano Ronaldo managed to rifle home from close range.
On Twitter after the game Pepe Reina was adamant the Man United winner was offside.
What RTK has to say
It’s one of them, isn’t it.
The Anfield icon has a point: Jesse Lingard was practically lying on the feet of the Villareal keeper.
Whilst he isn’t in the shot stopper’s line of vision he’s certainly impacting him with his presence.
The Spaniards can count themselves hard done by, the Mancs can count themselves lucky.
