Neal Maupay continued his impressive scoring run last night and it has us thinking that he could eventually become the ideal Liverpool transfer target.
The Frenchman scored a dramatic 95th-minute equaliser for Brighton in the M23 derby against Crystal Palace.
It looked as if Patrick Vieira’s side were going to pick up all three points against their rivals before Maupay chased a hopeful ball over the top and chipped Vicente Guaita in spectacular fashion.
It was his fourth goal in six Premier League games so far this season. He has already reached half of his total number from last campaign in 27 games less.
The ex-Brentford striker has contributed to Brighton’s fantastic start to the season. They are one of the five teams that are one point behind first-place Liverpool in the league table.
Maupay is finally starting to finish the chances that he is getting. Missing big scoring opportunities has been a big problem for him since he came to the Premier League.
It is a big reason that Graham Potter’s side came just 16th in the table last season when expected points had them at fifth. They somehow managed to underperform on their xG by a massive 14 goals.
So basically, Brighton were doing everything brilliantly but choked when it came to the finish.
Maupay resembles a Liverpool legend
Maupay was a key figure in this. He only scored eight goals in the league, despite having an xG of 13.
Now that he and his teammates have managed to start putting away their chances, the Seagulls are where their play deems they should be.
We think that Maupay is likely to continue this flying form. If he does, he could become the perfect signing for Liverpool next summer.
We have always been huge fans of the 25-year-old. While he often fluffed his lines in front of goal, everything else he did was always fantastic.
It is very common to see a striker go through a bad finishing spell before picking it back up and become a goal machine in his mid-20s.
We think that this is what is going on with Maupay. Something has just clicked with him and he is now actually overperforming on his expected goals.
With Liverpool in need of a striker, he could easily become a target in the near future. As well as his ability to get himself in position to receive high-quality chances, he presses very well.
He also has a bit of needle to him that makes him an intriguing character. We saw the best of that with his ear-cupping celebration against Palace.
In fact, he reminds us of Luis Suarez in this regard. And the more we think of it, his playing style is rather similar to the Uruguayan as well.
Everyone remembers how well-loved Suarez was because of this win-or-die attitude as well as his tendency to wind up opposition fans and players. Maupay has the potential to do similar.
It remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp will change the system up a bit next season by signing an out-and-out No 9. If he does, then Neal Maupay could be a fantastic option for Liverpool.
A 20-goal season is on the cards. If he pulls it off, then we could well see him at Anfield next season.
