This summer Liverpool were linked with all and sundry. The Reds were rumoured to be in for a number of players with fans expressing concern about depth in key areas. Only one signing was made. Porto star Otavio has spoken about rumours linking him with Liverpool over the summer.
Liverpool summer transfer window
Going into the summer transfer window plenty of Liverpool fans were expecting fireworks.
Kopites wanted a centre back, a centre midfielder and a striker to come in.
The reasoning was simple: our defence was devastated last season, Gini Wijnaldum left and we are without a natural number nine.
In the end Liverpool signed Ibrahima Konate and nobody else. The Reds focused instead on contract renewals.
Despite the lack of activity the club was linked with dozens of players throughout the window.
Otavio on Liverpool transfer rumours
This summer a Porto player was consistently linked with an Anfield switch.
A Bola claimed that Liverpool bid £20m plus Marko Grujic for Otavio.
No such move materialised and the versatile midfielder remained in Portugal.
Ahead of the sides’ Champions League clash the Porto star has spoken about the rumours, telling a pre-match press conference:
“Whether they were interested or not, I don’t know.
“But if there is any team interested in me, it would be for my work in both the league and the Champions League. We always have to give our best regardless of the competition.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool and Otavio was a frustrating saga.
However, the player’s coy response is intriguing. In these scenarios players are typically quick to dismiss such speculation.
Perhaps there was something in this rumour after all.
It would make sense after all; he can play pretty much anywhere in front of the defence.
