Mateusz Musialowski finally found the net for the Under 23s on Friday evening. The promising teenager has hit another milestone.
Liverpool Under 23s lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Friday thanks to a 95th-minute winner from the Blues. There was still reasons to be positive, however.
Most notably, this game saw Mateusz Musialowski come to life at Under 23s level. The Pole made the step up this season but hadn’t quite found his feet.
In his fourth start, though, Musialowski managed to score two good goals – his first strikes in Premier League 2. That, at least, gives Liverpool reason to smile.
Musialowski scores for Under 23s
Musialowski is one of the brightest prospects at Liverpool right now, even if he doesn’t quite have the recognition of someone like Kaide Gordon. He’s consistently shone at Under 18 level before making the step up this season.
That in of itself is a testament to his ability – Musialowski is still only 17. The U23s put him up against players much further along in their physical development and his two goals suggest he’s on the right path.
Last season, Musialowski really caught the eye in what was his first campaign with the Reds. He shone very brightly, particularly in the Youth Cup.
It wasn’t just the fact he was scoring goals but how he was scoring them. Musialowski is capable of brilliance that you rarely see at any level. We’ll never tire of that goal against Newcastle United back in March, for instance.
The teenager just ran through their team in a manner reminiscent of certain Argentines. It was a sensational goal and one that, understandably, raised eyebrows at Liverpool.
But the big question now is whether he can translate those qualities to U23 level. Few can, after all, and it’s regularly where gifted kids struggle once they’re up against more physicality and experience.
Musialowski proved against Chelsea that he can deliver, though. And if he does that on a consistent basis, we have no doubt that Jurgen Klopp will want to trial him in the senior side before long.
