Ex-Red says Jurgen Klopp has one 'phenomenon' skill that sets him apart

Jurgen Klopp has one skill that sets him apart from other coaches, according to a former Liverpool defender. The boss is certainly something special.

Ragnar Klavan is quite clearly a big fan of Jurgen Klopp. The Estonian believes the current Liverpool boss is unlike anyone else he’s ever worked with, calling him a phenomenon.

Specifically, Klavan is in awe of the German’s man-management.

“What I didn’t have with other coaches in team meetings is he never repeated himself,” Klavan told the Betsafe Eesti Podcast (translated by Goal). “He always talked from a different angle or there was a slight joke in it.

“He sensed the player and the team so well. He knew when to say what. If he saw there were problems in the team, he could turn it around with a simple joke or vice versa, when the team didn’t take it too seriously, then he showed them who’s boss.

“That, for me, is his phenomenon. That he can read the team so well, and individually as well.”

Klopp has a special skill

Even from afar, it’s easy to see where Klavan is coming for. The incredible spirit at the club since Klopp took over is clear to see, as is the admiration every player has for him.

But it’s also obvious on the pitch. As we saw in 2019/20, Liverpool are capable of generating unbelievable momentum through a special mentality.

That’s largely down to Klopp and how he keeps things ticking along. You can’t generate that kind of momentum and consistency by doing the same thing every week – that breeds complacency.

Somehow, Klopp finds a way to eliminate that complacency and keep the team at full-strength virtually every week, with virtually the same XI. It’s truly remarkable.

So we completely believe that Klavan hasn’t seen it elsewhere. What Klopp succeeds in doing is incredibly special.
