Joe Gomez says there’s a special environment at Liverpool among their centre-backs. The Reds have certainly amassed a talented selection.
Liverpool currently have their best selection of centre-backs in their history – providing they all stay fit. Virgil van Dijk leads the way as the standout and is widely regarded to be the world’s best.
But beyond him stand both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. Both have partnered Van Dijk to tremendous success, be it in the Premier League (Gomez) or Champions League (Matip). Few clubs can boast a trio that good, that experienced, and that familiar with one another.
And then there’s Ibrahima Konate. Liverpool’s new signing has huge potential and is already very experienced at just 22.
The Reds look secure in the short-term and long-term, providing their players stay injury-free and work well with one another. According to Gomez, though, the latter is nothing to worry about.
Gomez on positive environment
“It’s a healthy environment. We’re all really close. Everyone knows how close I am with Virgil, but I am with Joel as well,” said Gomez, per the Liverpool Echo.
“Maybe people don’t see it because Joel is not on social media, but we are all very close.
“It’s healthy and we all need rotation as well. We’ve all had our injuries, and I think that [rotation] will help us.
“We embrace the challenge, it’s what you expect at a club like Liverpool.”
It’s wonderful to hear and it sounds as though everyone has bought into the idea of rotation this season. That’s absolutely vital. Injuries last season cost Liverpool massively and all four of them had lengthy spells out.
There’s always a risk, however, that players want to get back playing regularly right away. Gomez makes it clear that everyone is willing to step aside for the others, though.
Liverpool can’t ask for more and it seems the club has something truly special at centre-back right now. You can’t ask for more.
