Fabio Vieira will soon sign a new contract, according to reports. Liverpool were linked with the FC Porto midfielder.
This comes from Record. They write that Fabio Vieira is on the brink of a new contract with FC Porto. There’s a race to get one done, too, as his current deal expires next summer.
The 21-year-old is a strange prospect. He’s very inexperienced for a player of his age with such a reputation. Vieira had started just five Primeira Liga games before this season.
At the same time, he won Best Player at the Under 21 Euros this summer. Clearly, he’s very talented – even if Porto haven’t used him all that much.
Enter Liverpool, who supposedly wanted to capitalise on the situation. CMJournal claimed the Reds were ready to offer £17m for Vieira.
Now, as we wrote here, that price looks both great and awful. £17m on an inexperienced 21-year-old is ridiculous but £17m on the best player at the U21 Euros is pretty great.
Though, the fact he had under a year to go on his deal makes that price sound a little strange. And perhaps there was never that much in it – no one outside of Portugal reported this interest.
Fabio Vieira to get new contract
Vieira still doesn’t start very often but is getting games this season. He did start on the 19th of this month, though – his first of the campaign.
The fact he registered three assists is quite remarkable, then, and does suggest he has something about him. Liverpool might get an up-close view of that soon, too.
They play in Porto next week as the Reds continue their Champions League campaign. We’re not sure Vieira will actually feature, given his game-time this season, but there’s a chance.
If he does, we’ll finally get to judge that reported £17m price ourselves.
