Curtis Jones will soon be invaluable to Liverpool. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a particularly remarkable week.
Curtis Jones has seen things slow down a little in 2021. His 2020 was quite incredible, featuring debuts, goals, and establishing himself in midfield during an injury crisis.
But in 2021, Jurgen Klopp has leaned into more experienced players. Though, this season did see 18-year-old Harvey Elliott get the nod over Jones, too.
It means Jones got his first start of the season against Norwich City on Tuesday. It was also his 50th appearance for Liverpool – a fantastic milestone after just two years of senior football.
The start was also particularly notable for the position Jones played – holding midfield. That made it quite a remarkable week in which the Scouser showed a brilliant ability.
Curtis Jones will be invaluable
Jones played holding midfield and he did look quite comfortable. He was a constant option, brilliant at avoiding a press, and moved Liverpool forward when he could.
There were some issues to iron out – particularly defensively – but the potential is there. Jones having potential in a position isn’t particularly noteworthy, though.
What certainly is noteworthy is that this was Jones’s third different position in a week. Against AC Milan, he came on as a left-winger. He then played a more attacking midfield role against Crystal Palace.
In fact, he even moved to that more advanced role in the second half against Norwich.
That kind of versatility is remarkable. Very few players can look comfortable in three different roles, all in quick succession. Jones looks to have real potential in each, too.
And that will make him invaluable. A player who knows the playing style inside-out, who can cover several roles, and will only get better and better? Throw in that he’s home-grown and it’s difficult to see how Liverpool could ever run out of uses for Jones – and that’s before considering that he’s already a standout talent.
Building your squad is far, far easier with players like this. Jones appears to have a special talent for playing in several roles – one that he should develop over the next few years.
And with that, Liverpool find one of the most useful players in their squad.
