Is Curtis Jones too cocky? He could be, according to former Liverpool defender Mark Wright. The 20-year-old hasn’t started a major game this season.
Mark Wright believes Curtis Jones might be a little too cocky. That’s the most obvious explanation for the Scouser not being a regular in Liverpool’s XI.
Wright, who played over 150 Premier League games for Liverpool, explained on the Seaman Says podcast how he doesn’t believe Jurgen Klopp would go for Jones’s confidence. That, he says, is likely why he’s been benched.
“Look at Curtis Jones who came through last season and did so well,” said Wright. “Now he’s on the fringe again and it’s probably because Curtis has a bit of a ‘here I am’ a bit of a swagger.
“The manager won’t like that. He’ll say ‘know your place, this is about the team’ and he’s been benched a little bit because of those reasons I believe, and that’s what we all believe.”
Is Curtis Jones too cocky?
We’re not sure about this one. Jones certainly has confidence but he’s also a wonderful team player – it’s not as though he doesn’t press or show for teammates.
It certainly was notable that Harvey Elliott was starting Premier League games instead of the 20-year-old, however. It’s certainly possible that Liverpool simply believe Elliott is already a better fit, though.
But if there were worries about Jones’s attitude, there’s no way Klopp would throw him into that AC Milan game on the left wing. Not with it being as tight as it was.
We imagine that fitness – Jones missed the opener through concussion protocols – and other players getting their chance has instead put Jones on the bench. The season is a long one, though, and the more Jones plays well, the more games he’ll get.
There’s plenty of competition in midfield, even with Elliott’s injury, and earning a place is tough. That should be Jones’s aim this season – not curbing his confidence.
