Jurgen Klopp says he texted Virgil van Dijk after watching the Dutchman play for his country. The Liverpool boss saw a ‘scary moment’.
Jurgen Klopp wasn’t too sure about Virgil van Dijk this week. He says he saw some worrying moments as his star defender featured for the Netherlands.
It appeared that Van Dijk was limping during the game – obviously a very worrying sign as he continues his return from a serious knee injury.
In fact, Klopp says he texted Van Dijk in an effort to ease his concerns about the Dutchman.
Klopp texted Van Dijk
“With Virgil, that was obviously a scary moment, you can imagine,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. “I sent him a message after the game, ‘Are you alright?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘100 per cent?’ ‘200 per cent.’ ‘Come on, send me a video of you without limping…’ ‘I’m only limping off.’
“So he called me from the bus and said, ‘Boss, I’m fine!’ I said, ‘Why are you limping then?’ He said, ‘My wife asked the same!’.
“So, yeah, that was a bit of a tricky moment.”
Fortunately, it turns out Van Dijk is completely fine and ready to go for the weekend. Liverpool travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday.
Unfortunately, though, this is likely to be a theme over the next few months. Maybe the entire season, in fact. Any little knock or issue for Van Dijk will be a heart-stopper – we know we’ve had a couple of moments already this season.
It might be enough for Klopp to ease up on his use of Van Dijk, too. The Dutchman usually plays every single game but Liverpool do have several good options at centre-back. The boss can afford to rest his star on occasion.
And this Sunday might be one of those occasions. Liverpool host AC Milan the following midweek – perhaps Klopp saves Van Dijk for that one.
Either way, we should all prepare for moments like this. Van Dijk will naturally give us some nervy moments.
