Liverpool are shy of a lethal striker, a plan B option for when we can’t break down a stubborn defence. One club chief believes that he has the solution to the Reds’ problems. Genk director Dimitri de Conde believes Liverpool should sign Paul Onuachu from him.
Jürgen needs a striker
At the minute we are without an out and out striker.
Roberto Firmino was converted into a false nine after arriving on Merseyside as an attacking midfielder.
Meanwhile Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota are naturally wingers.
Sure, any of the above can play through the middle if needed but they aren’t natural, out and out, traditional number nines.
Jürgen Klopp needs a player like that. We often face stubborn low blocks and when we do we need a plan B, a fox in the box, a magnet for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson’s crosses.
Liverpool should sign Paul Onuachu
Some Liverpool fans will remember Paul Onuachu.
The 6ft 7in tall Genk striker actually scored against the Reds, a bullet header in the Champions League.
However, the goal was disallowed for what was a very soft foul.
Genk sporting director Dimitri de Conde believes the towering forward could do a job for the Reds, telling Het Belang van Limburg:
“Did you see Liverpool against Chelsea? Liverpool have the best strikers, but none with the same profile as Onuachu.
“He would have scored against 10 men. I’m not saying that Paul would play 90 minutes every week in Liverpool, but a club like that could really use him.”
What RTK has to say
We actually wrote about this transfer in the wake of the striker’s performance against us.
As the director points out, he would be a break glass in case of emergency player.
When we’re desperate for a goal in the final minutes we can bring him on and hope he wins a header in the box.
We certainly won’t be mad if this notion becomes a reality.
