Liverpool fans haven’t had much to shout about in the past few months. The Reds signed just the one player during the transfer window despite a raft of exits. Not only have we not had much to celebrate plenty of Kopites are up in arms. Liverpool fans on Twitter are fuming about the new Nike kit.
Record breaking kit deal
In 2020 it was confirmed that Liverpool would be entering into a record breaking kit deal with sportswear giants Nike.
The megabucks deal was just another jewel in the club’s commercial crown with revenue streams having been revamped since FSG took over the club in 2010.
Although the deal is worth just £30m up front each year the bonuses and royalties make it an incredibly lucrative arrangement.
One sports marketing expert claimed that the deal could be worth up to £100m-per-year.
This is due to bonuses and the unusually large royalty cut of 20% of every shirt sold.
New Liverpool Nike kit
Tomorrow the Reds will be unveiling the side’s third kit for this season.
There has been plenty of leaks already and they seem to have been confirmed in a teaser video tweeted by the club.
The design harks back to a classic red and yellow kit the Reds wore in the 80s, an iconic strip with Crown Paints as sponsor.
Twitter reaction
Plenty of Liverpool fans believe the homage hasn’t been executed properly. A common response has been that it looks like a Ronald McDonald outfit.
It’s hard to disagree.
