'Eye of the needle': Naby Keita assist for Guinea has fans applauding

Naby Keita registered an assist for Guinea on Wednesday. It’s one that had some Liverpool fans applauding.

Guinea continued their World Cup qualification against neighbours Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday. It didn’t quite go their way, however.

They had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the end, despite taking the lead inside the opening 10 minutes. And they had Naby Keita to thank for the goal.

Keita carried the ball into the opposition half with a stepover or two before stopping dead. The Liverpool man then put his head up and picked out a fantastic pass to meet a wonderfully-timed run.

One touch and it was in – 1-0.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter to applaud the assist. It really was an impressive pass.

It’s a great pass and undoubtedly the kind of thing we want to see more of. Keita rarely does this stuff in Red, for whatever reason.

And admittedly, the defending isn’t particularly good here. We’re not sure why they’re standing off Keita, given he’s comfortably the best player on the pitch.

Still, it’s nice to see Keita having a clear creative effect on the game. The hope will be that he brings some of that confidence back with him to Merseyside next week.

Keita is in a bit of a strange position, too. He appears to have lost his place to Harvey Elliott – a player eight years his junior. That’s not easy to win back, given Elliott is only going to get better.

Using international games as confidence builders could be key, then. Fingers crossed this is a sign that Keita is finding some rhythm.
