Erling Haaland had very high praise for Virgil van Dijk on Tuesday. The Norwegian clearly rates the Liverpool star.
Virgil van Dijk is back playing international football. While that’s still quite a scary prospect for Liverpool, it is actually a good thing. He’s getting better by the game and returning to his best.
Wednesday saw the Netherlands captain return for his country as they took on Norway in a World Cup qualifier. That meant coming up against one of the world’s deadliest strikers – Erling Haaland.
And the Borussia Dortmund goalscorer has some high praise for Van Dijk ahead of the game. He rates the Liverpool star as the best he’s faced.
Haaland on Van Dijk
“I do not really fear anyone, I think he is the best defender,” said Haaland, per Talksport. “I think quite a few others in the room agree with me on that.
“He is fast, strong and ‘bad’ smart, and there are three important things you must have.
“I have played against him twice, I have said that he is the best I have met. He is a good player, so we have to try to play around him.”
Haaland had faced Van Dijk back in 2019 when he played for RB Salzburg. The Norwegian scored, too, as he continued his rapid ascent in the game.
But how did things work out this time around? Well, Haaland scored again. He got the opener after the Netherlands failed the clear the ball after a corner.
Haaland found himself open on the edge of the box, controlled it and just about lifted it over a recovering Van Dijk for 1-0.
The Netherlands did find an equaliser through Davy Klaassen and the game finished 1-1. Still, Haaland managed to get the better of Van Dijk this time around.
But it clearly takes a lot out of him to do so. And if it’s that difficult why not make life easier for yourself and join Van Dijk at club level? Really, it’s the only intelligent move to make.
In our opinion.
