Rio Ferdinand doesn’t believe Virgil van Dijk is back to his best. There’s more to come from the Liverpool star.
Virgil van Dijk is finally back and playing for Liverpool. He made his competitive return on the opening day and has played every minute for the Reds thus far.
He’s played well, too, both with and without the ball. The Reds have only conceded once in the Premier League and it was a goal the Dutchman couldn’t really prevent.
Things are looking good, then. Rio Ferdinand, however, thinks they could get better.
Ferdinand on Van Dijk
Ferdinand was talking on his YouTube channel. His co-host asked if Van Dijk was a little hesitant with his passing but the former England defender dismissed that.
“If you had seen the last couple of games that’s what he’s been doing – hitting 40 or 50 yard balls,” said Ferdinand. “Yeah, I don’t think it’s like that, you go in there and you play full throttle.
“I think he wanted to be fresh and to marshall [Romelu] Lukaku for the full 90 minutes.
“I think he’s still searching for full fitness, but I think he managed himself through the game well.”
Yeah, we certainly wouldn’t agree that Van Dijk has looked hesitant. We would agree with Ferdinand that the no.4 isn’t quite 100% yet.
But that’s just a good thing. Van Dijk has still looked great over the first three games – enough that Lukaku avoided him as much as he could on Saturday.
There’s nothing but positives here, then. Van Dijk already looks like a world-beater and almost certainly isn’t at full-fitness after close to a year without competitive football.
The more games he gets, the better he should look. Hopefully, we’re seeing Van Dijk back at his brilliant best come the end of the year. Any sooner would just be a wonderful bonus.
