Liverpool fans were left disappointed at 11pm last night. The transfer window slammed shut with the Reds having made only the one signing. However, we should remain optimistic as one major deal didn’t go through for another club. Michael Edwards now has three months to convince Kylian Mbappe to sign for Liverpool on a free transfer.
Lack of transfer business
The Reds were busy in the window, don’t get me wrong.
The only issue is that an overwhelming majority of the business was around outgoings.
Michael Edwards cashed in on a host of fringe players and loaned out a raft of youngsters.
Only Ibrahima Konate was signed by the club with the Frenchman arriving the moment the window opened.
The move was encouraging, Kopites thought FSG were about to get all of their business done early.
Then…crickets. Despite the obvious need for a forward and a midfielder the Reds made no further signings.
Mbappe stayed put
One of the major sagas of the window surrounded the crown prince of French football.
Real Madrid tried and tried again to sign Kylian Mbappe before the window closed.
The French prodigy was the subject of a series of bids from the Spanish side but despite being in the final year of his contract PSG rejected every offer for him.
PSG’s stubbornness is bizarre at best and financial nonsense at worst.
Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool for free
The window closing with the French forward still at PSG has given Kopites a glimmer of hope.
From January the youngster can negotiate a free transfer away from Ligue 1.
Therefore, Michael Edwards has three months to figure out how to convince Kylian Mbappe to agree a free transfer to Liverpool.
Of course, we can’t technically open negotiations yet.
However, the whole ‘tapping up’ thing appears to be a thing of the past with personal terms seemingly always agreed before a fee.
It will take the offer of a mammoth salary and a huge signing on fee but there is that glimmer of hope. He admires Liverpool, he admires Jürgen Klopp.
Maybe, just maybe we’ll see Michael Edwards’ masterpiece.
