Chelsea agree £4m deal for Liverpool target Saul Niguez

Chelsea have a deal in place to sign Saul Niguez, according to reports. Liverpool supposedly wanted the player.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano. He claims Chelsea will bring in Saul Niguez, initially on loan. It’ll cost them around £4m.

Further details are to come, presumably explaining an option or obligation to buy. They should follow soon, though, as Saul is already in London to confirm this one.

Reports initially broke back in March that Saul would look to leave Atletico Madrid this summer. The Spaniard didn’t enjoy the regular game-time he likes last season, despite Atletico winning La Liga.

There were then suggestions in June that Liverpool wanted the 26-year-old. Those claims continued all summer, with the Mirror saying earlier this month that the Reds still held interest.

In fact, AS said under two weeks ago that Liverpool had an offer in place. Manchester United then got involved, however, drove Saul’s price up and the Reds were unable to push forward.

We explained here why United had the upper hand over Liverpool. As it turned out, though, Chelsea were the ones to eventually get this one over the line.

Chelsea to sign Saul Niguez

We’ve wanted Liverpool to sign Saul since that very first report in March. Long before the Reds were linked with the player. He just seems like a perfect fit for the post-Gini Wijnaldum Reds.

Saul is a very versatile midfielder who thrives on the left. There’s an obvious place on the left of a midfield three, exactly where Wijnaldum featured.

But wage demands appear to have brought this one to an end. In truth, Saul wouldn’t have been a first-team player with Liverpool. Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson would all have been ahead of him, making any large demands difficult to justify.

We’re still disappointed, though. We thought Jurgen Klopp could have worked wonders with the Spaniard. Instead, we’ll watch him turn out in Blue.
