Andy Robertson says Cristiano Ronaldo joining Manchester United is like ‘their king returning’. The Liverpool full-back knows what facing the Portuguese legend is like.
Cristiano Ronaldo completed his return to Manchester United this week. United paid under £13m to sign him from Juventus and he arrived on a two-year deal with an option for another year.
It’s arguably the biggest transfer of the Premier League’s window. While not the most expensive, Ronaldo remains one of the biggest stars in the game. He also finished top scorer in Serie A last season as Juve scraped fourth place.
Is it a deal that pushes United into title contention? We’re not quite sure but Liverpool will certainly view them as rivals to start this season.
So how do the Reds see this signing? We got an idea on Tuesday as Andy Robertson had the question put to him in a press conference.
Robertson on Ronaldo
“We’ll leave it to United fans to worry about that,” said Robertson. “Their prince or king is returning, I suppose.
“I’m not too bothered about it until we have to face them because I’ve played against him before and he’s a fantastic player and one that needs your full attention.
“But United have got world-class players all over the pitch. They’ve added another and they’re all difficult.
“Like I said, I’ll worry about that when we’re playing United.”
It’s the right response, certainly. Liverpool will ignore the deal and focus on what they’re doing – until October 24th.
The Reds travel to Old Trafford on that date and it promises to be a huge one. In fact, it promises to be a huge week as Liverpool are away at Atletico Madrid just five days prior.
We’ll see what Ronaldo offers in a couple of months, then, in one of the biggest games of the season.
