Liverpool moved to sign Bobby Clark from Newcastle United this week. Here are the five clubs that the Reds reportedly topped.
Liverpool confirmed on Thursday that they’ve signed Bobby Clark from Newcastle United. The 16-year-old joins as a very highly-rated English prospect.
He’s yet another talented teenager in their ranks, joining the likes of 16-year-old Kaide Gordon and 17-year-old Mateusz Musialowski. We can’t forget Harvey Elliott, either – he’s still only 18.
But really, there are several very exciting prospects in the academy right now – some of whom may debut this season. Clark joins that group and he faces a tough task to stand out.
Though, he’s certainly caught the eye so far. Liverpool were reportedly far from the only major club hoping to poach Clark.
Liverpool sign Bobby Clark
The Daily Mail reported over a month ago that Liverpool were closing in on Clark. That saw them steal a march on five other clubs trying to get his signature.
Newcastle were one of them, of course, as were Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Bayern Munich, too, asked the Magpies about Clark.
We’re talking about a highly-rated prospect, then. Or at least, a teenager who caught the eye of several clubs with top academies.
But for whatever reason, Clark chose Liverpool. It’s a testament to the pull of the academy right now and the obvious path to the first-team might play a role in that.
Elliott, Curtis Jones and Neco Williams have all played senior roles in recent years. Leighton Clarkson and Billy Koutmetio made Champions League debuts, too, while Rhys Williams played out the end of last season to great acclaim.
If you’re good enough, Liverpool will give you a shot. Clark will look at that with inspiration, you’d hope. Perhaps we’ll see him get his chance before long.
