Liverpool given 4th-best chances of Champions League success

Liverpool have the fourth-best chances of winning the Champions League this season. That’s according to one data analysis outfit.

This comes from FiveThirtyEight. The analysis group believe Liverpool have the fourth-best chances of winning the Champions League this season.

That’s after the Reds landed in a particularly difficult group. They’ll feature alongside Atletico Madrid, FC Porto and AC Milan – three opponents who could cause them real problems.

Thus FTE give Liverpool around a 9% chance of lifting the trophy at the end of it all. Only Manchester City (16%), Bayern Munich and Chelsea (both 11%) rank better.

As for getting out of the group? 77%. That’s surprisingly high – fifth-highest, in fact – given the strength of that group.

They also rate Liverpool as having a 49% chance of topping their group. That’s above Atletico, who only have a 29% chance.

Liverpool given decent Champions League chances

This stuff might not be the most fascinating in the world but it does give an idea of how difficult the tournament will be. Although, we’re quite surprised at Liverpool’s chances.

Chelsea and Bayern only really sit ahead of them in the order because of how much easier their relative groups are. This all really paints Liverpool as one of the favourites.

Which, to be fair, is something we truly believe. We just also thought there was a lot of bias in that. Instead, it seems pretty realistic.

Though, it does all depend on things going right. That means the opposite of last season, essentially, when everything went wrong.

Liverpool desperately need the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson to stay fit this time around. While there’s a little more depth at the back than last season, the squad as a whole could do with some more.

But we’re feeling confident. FiveThirtyEight tend to be fairly accurate with this kind of thing – hopefully they’re only a few places off Liverpool’s reality.
