Liverpool could still complete a deal for Sheyi Ojo this week, according to reports. The winger doesn’t have an obvious place in the Reds’ squad.
This comes from journalist Neil Jones. He told Redmen TV that Sheyi Ojo will probably leave Liverpool on a permanent deal in the next week.
“Yeah, he will yeah and I think it’ll be a permanent move,” said Jones. “Liverpool are in that sort of position.
“He’s got two years left on his contract, so whatever he does on loan won’t boost his value as his contract will be expiring.”
This comes after Jones wrote for Goal that Liverpool hoped to pick up around £5m for Ojo before the window closes. The 24-year-old appears to be on his way out, then.
Liverpool seek Sheyi Ojo deal
Ojo’s contract is the big one here. If he has two years left, then selling him now is the only real option. No one is paying anything in a year’s time.
But the Mirror claim Liverpool are already at that point. They believe his deal ends in 2022 which would effectively rule out a sale.
So we’re not entirely sure who’s right here. If it’s Jones, then Liverpool could still secure that £5m this week.
Ojo is good enough to play with regularity in the Championship, as he proved for Cardiff City last season. That should be worth £5m to someone at that level.
The worry, though, is that it hasn’t happened already. Liverpool didn’t actually take Ojo on their pre-season camp, which tells us they wanted to sell him.
But no one picked him up, given he’s still with the Reds. There doesn’t seem to be great demand.
Still, £5m is such a small fee for a 24-year-old with talent. We’ll cross our fingers that Liverpool and Ojo can find a buyer before the window closes next week.
