Rhys Williams’ future is tied to Nat Phillips, according to reports. Liverpool have a week to make a big decision.
This comes from the Liverpool Echo. They claim that Rhys Williams’ future is unclear right now as it depends on Nat Phillips.
If the latter stays at Liverpool this season, Williams will depart on loan. Otherwise, the Reds want to keep the 20-year-old around as cover.
It means a decision has around one week to happen either way. The end of the transfer window looms and it’s not good for either player if both remain at Anfield.
Rhys Williams & Nat Phillips’ future
It’s an awkward one. Having both around really doesn’t make any sense as they’re fifth and sixth in the pecking order.
Williams, in particular, will be desperate for some movement over the next week as he’ll be that sixth choice. The 20-year-old will want games after developing rapidly last season – this isn’t the time for things to stall.
But Phillips’ situation is a difficult one. We’re quite shocked that no one has come in with a decent bid, in all truth, as he proved last season to be a very good Premier League centre-back.
We can understand his reluctance to leave, though. Phillips got regular games for Liverpool last season and at 24, it’s not going to be easy to get back into that position.
Leaving almost certainly means taking a step down. It’s not the usual way of things after a breakout season.
And then there’s the fact that all four of Liverpool’s first-choice centre-back options had long-term injury problems last season. Phillips may well look at that situation and see potential games once again.
Liverpool can’t have both Williams and Phillips at the club this season, though. That much is clear. It’s not smart for either player to sit around not getting games after their exploits last season.
Hopefully, then, everyone gets their answers in the next week.
