Blackburn Rovers fans have a new hero on their hands, and his name is Leighton Clarkson.
The Liverpool youngster joined his hometown club on a season-long loan last week.
He impressed for the Reds in pre-season, earning himself a move to the Championship in order to continue his development.
Clarkson will be hoping that a loan at Blackburn can do similar things for him as it did for Harvey Elliott last season.
Well, the 19-year-old made his debut for Rovers against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. He did not disappoint.
Clarkson arguably Blackburn’s best player in his first Championship game
While Tony Mowbray’s side lost 2-1 to the unbeaten Baggies, Clarkson was outstanding.
Despite being seen as a No 6 at Liverpool, he lined out as a No 10 at Ewood Park.
Blackburn went 1-0 down inside a minute thanks to an Alex Mowatt strike.
It was 2-0 heading into the break as Matty Phillips bagged on the stroke of halftime.
Yet the home team pulled one back in the second half through Ben Brereton (Diaz too, I guess) five minutes after the restart.
Clarkson may not be awarded an assist for the goal, but he played a major role in it. He picked up the ball on the left-hand side and played a delightful outside of the foot pass into Brereton’s path.
Sam Johnstone failed to deal with it, and the Chile international tapped into an empty net.
It was a hint at the fantastic technical ability that Clarkson possesses.
Yet it wasn’t the only positive aspect of his performance. He made a very impressive three key passes and two tackles in the 67 minutes that he played.
It looks like he is set to have a phenomenal season in the second tier. If Saturday’s game was anything to go by, he certainly will.
Blackburn fans in love with Clarkson already
It hasn’t taken long for Clarkson to impress his new club’s fans.
Many Rovers supporters took to Twitter to share their love for their new young hero.
