Everton have bid £25m for Joaquin Correa, according to reports. This is one Liverpool should pay attention to.
Journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims Everton have bid for Joaquin Correa. It’s around £25m with bonuses and Lazio are considering it.
It looks as though Everton have a plan, then. And in our opinion, Liverpool should, too.
Everton bid for Joaquin Correa
Correa is a player previously linked with Liverpool. Italian outlet Citta Celeste claimed the Reds liked him back in April 2020.
Nothing came of it, of course, but it was a move that made some sense. In a lot of ways, it still does.
That’s because of the makeup of Liverpool’s attack. The Reds have their famed front-three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
All are fine players but Firmino stands out as the unique one. He’s an unusual player as a natural False 9 – there aren’t many of those around.
Diogo Jota can cover him but he’s a very different player, looking to lead the line and run in behind rather than drop deep and create. Brining him in changes the side’s system.
But Correa is a very similar player to Firmino in a lot of ways. Again, he likes to play as a forward but he’s far more of a link player who works for others, rather than a goalscorer.
Per Statsbomb, Correa is involved in creating around 3.96 shots per game. That puts him in the top 4% of forwards across Europe’s top 5 leagues.
The Argentine also receives nearly 11 forward passes per game. Again, this puts him in the top 5% of forwards. He carries the ball forwards six times per game – that’s top 6%.
These numbers are all fantastic. Most teams wouldn’t look at them and see their centre-forward but Liverpool could. They’re all unusual strengths that Firmino brings to the side.
Now, the Brazilian does more and is a better player than Correa. But Liverpool are unlikely to find a better squad option who can do what Firmino does.
He’s only just turned 27, too, meaning he’s nearly three years younger. Correa could come in and stick around for years.
We think Liverpool should take a look at this one, then. Correa is a very good player who could fit them well. And if they beat Everton to his signature, that’s all the better.
