Liverpool fans are hoping for further additions to the squad this summer. The Reds are in dire need of reinforcements in the midfield and attack but we keep being told that there’s no business to be done. Quotes from last year show that Liverpool fans can’t trust Jürgen Klopp when he speaks about transfers and that’s a good thing.
Liverpool transfer needs
The Reds lost Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer this summer.
The side’s most reliable midfielder joined PSG, along with Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos among others.
During his five-year stay at Anfield no player clocked as many minutes as the Dutchman.
Therefore finding a reliable replacement for him this summer seems a matter of urgency.
Furthermore, the Reds need to add quality in depth to the final third.
At the moment there isn’t enough competition or cover in the attack and we are lacking an out and out number nine.
Don’t trust Jürgen Klopp quotes
All of the talk with the media has been to ease expectations.
The boss has said that he is happy with his squad depth. Klopp told TV2, “it makes no sense to add more players.”
However, we shouldn’t always believe the gaffer when it comes to transfer business.
Last year the Reds were persistently linked with a move for Thiago and all summer the rumours were rubbished until all of a sudden there he was, smiling and asking ‘how are we?’
In a pre-match press conference Klopp said of the situation:
“It’s nice that we are linked with [Thiago], but that’s pretty much all, really. It’s because he’s a good player, Liverpool‘s a big club, so that’s nice.
“But apart from that, really nothing to say about that.”
The boss was eager to dismiss the rumours shortly before the signing was completed.
Therefore, we can take his recent comments with a pinch of salt.
We can’t always believe what Klopp has to say about our transfer business and as it stands that is a good thing.
We need fresh faces, he keeps telling us he’s satisfied. Fingers crossed this is a repeat of the Thiago situation and he’s just trying to move attention away.
