Xherdan Shaqiri should join Lyon soon. A transfer chain appears ready after the French club struck a deal with Chelsea.
L’Equipe reported on Wednesday that Chelsea will loan Emerson Palmieri to Lyon this season. That deal should go through in the next day or two.
And that affects Liverpool. With cover at left-back, Lyon should be able to sell Maxwel Cornet to Burnley.
Per the Athletic, that deal is on for around £13.5m and once Lyon get their money, they’ll bid for Xherdan Shaqiri.
Sky Sports believe Liverpool’s asking price is around £12.75m, too, though it feels unlikely that Lyon would spend the entire amount of Cornet’s fee. Instead, the Reds may settle for less.
Goal journalist Neil Jones told Redmen TV that Lyon initially offered £4m. Liverpool considered that ‘ridiculous’, however, and want close to £10m.
We can expect that to be the big negotiation over the next week, then. Liverpool will want as much of the Cornet money as possible, while Lyon clearly want a bargain fee for Shaqiri.
Xherdan Shaqiri to join Lyon?
This one seems more and more likely. In fact, we’re not seeing many other clubs linked with Shaqiri these days.
We can expect some movement, then, and Liverpool will likely have to settle for a discount price here. Otherwise, they’ll be stuck with Shaqiri for another year.
It’s hard to see how he gets games this season, though, and that would tank his price even further for 2022. Selling now just makes sense.
He’s not the only player we see leaving Liverpool, either. There are around seven who could depart in the next few weeks.
Ben Woodburn to Hearts on loan appears to be the next deal to happen. After that, though, Shaqiri may be next in line.
