Tony Mowbray has heaped praise on Leighton Clarkson after Blackburn Rovers secured the Liverpool youngster on loan. The 19-year-old is following in successful footsteps.
Leighton Clarkson will spend next season with Blackburn Rovers and Tony Mowbray is thrilled. The Rovers boss clearly wanted the teenager this season.
“In my mind it’s been rolling on a while, we’ve had to try and line other things up before we pushed the button on Leighton,” said Mowbray, per the Lancashire Telegraph.
“He’s a lovely football player, he’s very local and it’s something he’ll have really wanted to do and we were very aware of that.”
Mowbray then went into exactly what he likes about Clarkson.
“The more you watch his clips of him playing, the more you think ‘wow’, what a talent.
“He’s a great passer of the ball, sees short and long passes and fights his weight,” he explained.
“If he can stamp his personality and authority on our team then that will be great for us.”
Mowbray praises Leighton Clarkson
Clarkson is certainly inviting some pressure on with this deal. Harvey Elliott spent last season with Blackburn, of course, to spectacular results.
The flipside is that we can be genuinely excited about this one. Clarkson is a very talented young player and one who could have a future with Liverpool.
We also know that Blackburn are a wonderful club at developing players. Not only did Elliott come on leaps and bounds last season but Adam Armstrong earned himself a £15m move to Southampton.
Liverpool will hope for similar progression from Clarkson. If he can learn how to dictate play, handle the physicality and show production, there’s no reason he can’t be in the Reds’ squad someday.
Elliott managed it, of course, and Clarkson will hope to follow in his footsteps.
