AFCON 2021: 2 Liverpool stars to meet as group stage announced

The AFCON 2021 groups are out and we now know two Liverpool stars will face one another. The Reds will have at least three players at the tournament.

AFCON 2021 kicks off in January, with three Liverpool players heading to the tournament. As things stand, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita will all compete for their countries.

But who knows? Perhaps the Reds add another African star to their ranks by then.

What we do know is that we’ll get at least one Liverpool vs Liverpool game at the tournament. That news came with the official announcement of the groups.

The CAF officially unveiled their group stage on Tuesday. We’ll print them below:

Group A : Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cape Verde

Group B : Senegal, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi

Group C : Morocco, Ghana, Comoros, Gabon

Group D : Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Guinea-Bissau

Group E : Algeria, Sierra-Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire

Group F : Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia

One group should stand out to Liverpool fans – B. It sees both Senegal and Guinea paired together, meaning we’ll get Mane vs Keita.

Keita captains Guinea, while Mane is the star for Senegal. Both head into the tournaments with different ambitions, though.

Guinea failed to get past the Round of 16 last time out, losing 3-0 to eventual champions Algeria. We imagine they’ll hope to go at least one better this time around.

As for Senegal, they lost to the Algerians in the final. There’s little doubt that Mane will see this as a chance to lead his country to their first AFCON trophy.

Then there’s Salah. Egypt go into this one for their record 25th appearance at the tournament and will undoubtedly have eyes on winning it all.

They’ll turn to the Liverpool star for that, of course, as probably the best player at the tournament. Though, perhaps Mane has something to say about that.

As for what this all means for Liverpool, we wrote about the effect on their season here.
