Virgil van Dijk is in the provisional Netherlands squad for their September internationals. Liverpool must prepare themselves for this.
Virgil van Dijk is back playing competitive football and we couldn’t be happier. The Dutchman is such a massive positive at the back, single-handedly moving Liverpool up a level or two.
Seeing him back in friendlies was one thing but Saturday’s win over Norwich City was perfection. Van Dijk didn’t look like he broke a sweat as the Reds won 3-0.
So, same old Van Dijk, in other words. He marshalled the defence wonderfully well, kept the Canaries at bay and did it all with ease.
But this weekend didn’t come without concern.
Netherlands squad includes Van Dijk
The Netherlands have named Van Dijk in their provisional squad for the September internationals. Though, he could still be cut when they drop the numbers to 23.
But we imagine they’re simply waiting to see if he’s fit for Liverpool before including him. It’s hard to imagine they leave Van Dijk out if they believe he’s good to go.
That means the 30-year-old is in for an intense couple of months, right after his return from a serious knee injury. It’s not ideal for Liverpool, who likely hoped the Netherlands would wait a little longer.
It seems Liverpool will have to be the ones to take precautions, then. They’ll have to make sure he doesn’t play every single game between now and then.
Otherwise, Van Dijk will surely end up playing far too much football for someone who played zero between November and August. The risk of him breaking down again is just too high.
Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are all available as options, of course, so Liverpool can afford to leave Van Dijk out. Frankly, we’re not sure they have a choice here.
